INTRODUCTION. The National Institute provided:

l. National Survey Research in the USA on 100 community special play and recreation services, programs, and activities for people with disabilities.

2. A National Institute Conference
which brought together national, state, and local leaders in special/therapeutic recreation. The purpose of the Conference was to:

2.a. Review the research and findings;
2.b. Receive the expert papers on new models of special play and recreation;
2.c. Develop guidelines, goals, methods, principles, and recommendations for policies and practice in delivery of special/therapeutic recreation in community-based recreation provided by:

2.c.i. City, district, county, and state parks and recreation departments; and,
2.c.ii. Commercial, private and voluntary, youth service (BSA and GSA, YM-YWCA) agencies and organizations.

2.d. Prepare instructional materials for pre-service education (higher education) and in-service training (practitioner continuing education).

3. National Institute Training provided in-service training on community-based special recreation for people with disabilities for 3,250 practitioner personnel from 48 states at 40 in-service training sessions.

4. National Institute Dissemination national dissemination of 10 National Institute Reports (cited below) in numbers of 4,000 (Number 1, "New Concepts and New Processes") to 500 (Number 10, Project Report).
