LITERATURE:
"RT/TRS Literature; Recreational Therapy and Therapeutic Recreation Service Literature
" (1)

Compiled by Prof. John A. Nesbitt, Ed.D., CTRS, Pres./CEO
Special Recreation for disABLED International

Introduction. These books suggest the range and depth of professional and scientific knowledge in the recreation therapy/therapeutic recreation service (RT/TRS). Each book has "recreation therapy" or "therapeutic recreation" in the title. These books are announced currently by commercial booksellers, new and used, as being available. However, many of the used books will require a diligent search.

The RT/TRS movement started in 1900, at the turn of the Century, as part of the Progressive Movement and the Play and Recreation Movement. In those first years the aim was to provide play and recreation to children and youth in institutions for "blind ... crippled ... deaf and dumb ... orphaned ...."

These books demonstrate that Recreation Therapy/Therapeutic Recreation Service has created a distinct scientific body of knowledge and distinct professional standards for:
__Direct practice to/for/with clientele and professional ethics,
__Personnel pre-service education at the associate, bachelors, masters, and doctoral levels,
__Certification based on national examination and supervised performance,
__Continuing education and in-service training of professional personnel,
__Administration/management of service, and
__Professional functions and responsibilities such as research, refereed journals, professional representation to other professions, to government, and to non-governme5tnal organizations.

NOTE. This basic listing will be further developed. Special lists will be developed including:
__RT/TRS Basic Bookshelf, recommended current basic books on RT/TRS.
__RT/TRS Scientific Bookshelf, recommended current literature.
__RT/TRS Program and Activities Bookshelf, recommended basic books.
